Introduction to the Vredefort Dome area

I bet very few people in the world know that the largest impact crater on earth is in South Africa. This crater was formed +- 2000 million years ago when a meteor of 10km in diameter slammed into earth. The impact site is +120km south of where Johannesburg is situated today. The area is known as the Vredefort Dome and it is in the Northern Freestate province of South Africa.

Until quite recently, it was not even known that this crater existed, simply as the size of it made it impossible to see. Further more, large parts of the actual rim, has been eroded away over millions of years. It was only when photos from space became reality, that it was noticed. Originally, the crater could have been as wide as 300km in diameter, thus it is no wonder that it was not noticed.

What is left of the creator can be seen around the small town of Vredefort and is a low range of hills with a 180km diameter. The Vaal river is the second largest river in South Arica and it also meanders through the area. The whole area is also known for it scenic beauty and there is ample opportunity for visitors to experience this. Tourism to the area has been increasing steadily lately and there are lots available for tourists to enjoy.

Due to the unique geology of the area, it is believed that there are still lots of new discoveries to be made in this area. Local tour guides will gladly take visitors into the hills and share their knowledge on the area and the geological wonders found here.

Currently this area has been declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco and the process of making this formal is underway. This site will be the 7th such site to be declared in South Africa. As it is so close to Johannesburg, where most tourists arrive, it would be a loss for any tourist not to visit the area. It’s an easy 70 minute drive by car and all of it done on the freeway.

Tourism in the area is mainly focused around the small town of Parys, which offers a wide range of accommodation, entertainment, adventure and shopping options. The Vaal river is popular as a fly fishing destination and several kayaking and white water rafting operators are active in the area. The town is packed with antique shops, art galleries, restaurants and pubs.

Do yourself a huge favor and take a day or two to visit a truly wonderful destination that is still not over commercialized. You will have a whale of a time and I am sure that in time, you will return just to savor a bit more of this area, it’s people, nature and culture.
